Lesson on 18th July 2020, Syutsujin and Kurumabishi

Hi, it's Zuke from Japan.

Today we had a lesson of Taiko Drum at Satooto-sha located in Kobe.

Four of us practiced 'Syutsujin(出陣)',Departure to the battlefront, and 'Kurumabishi(車菱)',Caltrops. These are the main music and performance of our 'Buzin Taiko'.

'Shutsujin(出陣)' was drafted and composed by Namy(our master) with envisaging the tragedy of Samurai Master Nagaharu Bessyo at Miki castle in 1580. Nagaharu was killed there and could never join the battle against Hideyoshi Toyotomi, because his castle was surrounded by Toyotomi's army and was cut his line of supply. 'Shutsujin' is a kind of a requiem for Nagaharu, but also can be the music which could have encouraged his army if we can go back to the past and can play in front of him.

'Kurumabishi(車菱)' was also drafted by Namy and now being developed. This is an homage or a tribute to Sadanori Ougo, who won the battle with less army against Toyotomi's by adopting novel tactics like caltrops or mares, which stopped the male horses during the battle.

These are the focus and the background where our style of Japanese Taiko drum AND Samurai armors came from.

Here is one of the Japanese Taiko Drum available at Satooto-sha. Next time I would like to touch a bit about a variety of Taiko drum.

Thank you for visiting and see you next time.
